Grand Port est baptisé du nom du village du vieux grand port qui est l’endroit réel où les premiers Néerlandais ont débarqué et est également le premier port de l’île. L’emplacement historique Vieux Grand Port est situé dans le sud-est de l’Île Maurice et enferme les ruines des structures de pierres les plus anciennes jamais établies sur l’île. Les sièges sociaux hollandais se trouvaient sur ce chantier depuis 1638 à 1710. Une forteresse a été construite, qu’ils ont appelé « Frederik Hendrik », en l’honneur de leur règne. Elle est enfouie approximativement un niveau souterrain d’un mètre. Construit par les Néerlandais et plus tard succédé par les Français, la ville est un rappel de la vie coloniale de l’île. En 1722, quand le grand port été occupé par les français, une autre loge a été construit sur le même emplacement. C’était leur centre principal d’activité avant le début du 19ème siècle où il a été transféré à Mahebourg.

Grand Port is baptized after the name of the village of Vieux Grand Port which is the exact place where the first Dutch settlers landed and which was also the first port of the island. The historic Vieux Grand Port is situated in the southeast of Mauritius and the oldest ruins of the island are still to be found there. The Dutch colonial head offices were on this site from 1638 to 1710. A fortress was built, that they called « Frederik Hendrik », in honor of their reign.
